Today marks 20 years I have been married to the most wonderful woman in the world. I look back, and can't believe that this much time has already past. We have been through so much as a couple, and as a family. It seems like yesterday when we started dating..geez. I think that most folks would have thrown in the towel with trying to get through some of the obstacles we had been faced with. Our journey is certainly not over, and I'm sure God has a special plan for us both. I am a very blessed man and am looking forward to another 20 years. Thank you Susan, for being my best friend. I love you.

Geez...again, I have to report another passing of a great person. This is Grammie McNeight, Susan's grandmother. She became fairly ill over the last several weeks or so, and went peacefully in her sleep today. We of course will pray for the family and I know she will be missed. She had been a part of our lives for a very long time.

Just got the news this morning that Sam Cason has passed away. He was a friend of mine and I've known him for a very long time. He has struggled and fought such a long fight with cancer. Again, another victim of a terrible disease. The only good thing is that he is now done with his suffering, and is right now in heaven. God is so good.

I have to say, I don't think I can remember such a long stretch of cold weather in my lifetime that we have had here in the Sunshine State. It's been tough for us Floridians. I know, I know..we don't know "tough". But I'd like to see if you can handle July, August, and September here (if your from the cold states)...that's when you gotta be tough!!! It's finally warming up here, and the azaleas are in bloom and so are the oaks. Can you say allergies?

Anyway, just checking in. Haven't been posting much lately. But I do have some old pics I'm still going to throw up here soon for fun. I've taken some tome off from work this week (thank the good Lord), so hopefully I can chillax and to that.

Forget red and blue — color America white. There was snow on the ground in 49 states Friday. Hawaii was the holdout.

It was the United States of Snow, thanks to an unusual combination of weather patterns that dusted the U.S., including the skyscrapers of Dallas, the peach trees of Atlanta and the Florida Panhandle, where hurricanes are more common than snowflakes.

More than two-thirds of the nation's land mass had snow on the ground when the day dawned yesterday, and then it snowed ever so slightly in Florida to make it 49 states out of 50.

At the same time, those weird weather forces are turning Canada's Winter Olympics into the bring-your-own-snow games.

Who's the Great White North now?

"I'm calling it the upside-down winter," said David Robinson, head of the Global Snow Lab at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Snow paralyzed and fascinated the Deep South on Friday. Snowball fights broke out at Southern Mississippi University, snow delayed flights at the busy Atlanta airport, and Louisiana hardware stores ran out of snow supplies. Andalusia, Ala., shut down its streets because of snow. And yet, Portland, Maine, where snow is usually a given, had to cancel its winter festival for lack of the stuff.

Weather geeks turned their eyes to Hawaii. In that tropical paradise, where a ski club strangely exists, observers were looking closely at the islands' mountain peaks to see if they could find a trace of white to make it a rare 50-for-50 states with snow. But there was no snow in sight.

Hawaii's 13,800-foot Mauna Kea volcano, which often gets snow much of the year at its higher elevations, is the most likely place in the 50th state to have snow, but there "is nothing right now," said research meteorologist Tiziana Cherubini at the Mauna Kea Weather Center. It has been a few weeks since there has been snow in the mountains, and none is in the forecast, ruining a perfect 50-for-50, she said.

The idea of 50 states with snow is so strange that the federal office that collects weather statistics doesn't keep track of that number and can't say whether it has ever happened. The office can't even say whether 49 out of 50 has ever taken place before.

Snow experts at the Global Snow Lab were combing their records but said it may be days before they find out if there has ever been a 50-for-50 snow day. Their best suspect — Jan. 19, 1977 — had snow in Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia, but then Robinson looked for snow in South Carolina and couldn't find any.

As of early Friday morning, 67.1 percent of the U.S. had snow on the ground, with the average depth a healthy 8 inches. Normally, about 40 or 50 percent of the U.S. has snow cover this time of year, Robinson said.

It snowed for only 10 minutes in Century, Fla., just north of Pensacola, barely enough to scrape a few snowballs from the hood of a truck. But that was enough for 6-year-old Kaleb Pace.

"I've only ever seen snow on TV till now," Kaleb said, smiling.

This is after a month that saw the most snow cover for any December in North America in the 43 years that records have been kept. And then came January 2010, which ranked No. 8 among all months for North American snow cover, with more than 7.03 million square miles of white.

The all-time record is February 1978, with 7.31 million square miles. There is a chance this February could break that. There is also a chance that this could go down as the week with the most snow cover on record, Robinson said.

Stay tuned. The weather pattern is in a snow rut.

At least in Washington, where snow is now measured by the yardstick, more snow may be coming soon. It looks like a little more snow on Monday and maybe a lot more about a week or so after that.

"As long as this pattern persists we have potential for additional storms," said Dan Petersen, lead winter weather forecaster at the National Weather Service prediction center in Camp Springs, Md.

To count as snow cover, snow has to stick on the ground and be recorded at special stations at specific times when meteorologists check, Robinson said.

The strange snowfall pattern is produced by the El Nino weather phenomenon and its Arctic counterpart, Robinson and Petersen said.

During moderate to strong El Ninos like the current one, more moisture is pumped into the subtropical jet stream across the South, increasing precipitation, Robinson said. Then there's the Arctic Oscillation, the Northern cousin to El Nino, which shifts cold polar air south. That cold air can turn a rainstorm into a snowstorm.

A snowy winter doesn't disprove — or prove — global warming, Petersen and Robinson said. This is weather, which is variable, not long-term climate, and there is a huge difference.

"This has nothing to do with long-term trends," Petersen said. "This is just a several-week period."

Patrick Marsh, who is working on his doctorate in meteorology at the University of Oklahoma, has been trying to collect photos of snow on the ground in all 49 or 50 states. After his effort was publicized, he was flooded with photos and videos.

"It just shows that deep down inside, all of us is a weather weenie, a weather fanatic," Marsh said. "This is just an awesome weather event."

I have to say, it's been ridiculously cold here in Florida over the last almost 2 weeks. One thing is for sure, I know if your a native Floridian, this is hard to take :-) (and I know you yankees out there are laughing at me right now, I just know it) There's been chatter about the possibility of snow flurries, but I haven't seen any yet. I remember when I was 10 it snowed around here...we thought it was a blizzard. It would be neat to see again.

Another weekend is upon us, and I'm taking some much needed rest. It has been absolutely nuts at work (in which I'm not complaining too much because I have a job), but it has been quite taxing on the body and brain. It's frustrating though, because since being put on day shift, I've also had to go salary, and I'm working more hours than I did before...going to work dark and coming home dark is getting old. Earlier this week I had over 30 hours in just two days. Geez.

Well, that's why I took me some more days off because I need to spend time with family and relax. I'll post up some pictures next...

Give the gift of peace and quiet this father's day.

The idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Having been raised by her father, William Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.

In 1926, a National Father's Day Committee was formed in New York City. Father's Day was recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1956. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. So Father's Day was born in memory and gratitude by a daughter who thought that her father and all good fathers should be honored with a special day just like we honor our mothers on Mother's Day.

Knowing where to place your bets with a used car can be tricky. The horror stories are all too common -- the pieced-together parts, the unexplained and unexpected sounds and smells, the bodies in the trunk ...

Okay. Maybe the last one isn't quite as common.

But buying used doesn't have to be such a gamble if you do your research. There's a wealth of online information available that can make it easier to avoid a lemon. With the federal government's vehicle defect notices and J.D. Power and Associates' reliability data the most common mechanical issues are all easy to trace. In addition, U.S. News' used car listings make the search easier for the best used car options in your area.

But we've already done at that research to help you narrow down your choices. Check out our list of the best and worst used cars. Remember, while this list is a good start, all used cars are different. Before buying, make sure you give any used car -- even one on our best list -- a thorough inspection.

Worst Used Cars:
GMC Canyon

The GMC Canyon successfully balances an imposing stance on the highway while providing coddling comfort in the cab. Reviewers also praise the 2009 model's new V8 engine for helping the Canyon effectively compete with meatier trucks in its segment. But Consumer Reports cites the Canyon's troubled reliability history as the reason it makes their Worst Used Cars list. According to Consumer Guide, Canyons from 2004 through 2008 are "underpowered for anything other than daily commuting," with pronounced road noise and a tiresome ride depending on the trim. Consumer Guide says some commonly reported problems for these model years include electrical wiring problems with the OnStar system and weak exhaust valve springs that could cause the engine to misfire.

Chrysler Sebring

As Chrysler dealerships close across the country, you can expect unbelievable prices on both new and used models of the Sebring sedan or convertible. It's just too bad that shaky reliability, poor cabin quality and disappointing performance lead most reviewers to say the Sebring was never a great buy to begin with. Consumer Reports chose the Sebring convertible as one of the Worst Used Cars based on reliability data from vehicles from 1999 through 2008. Meanwhile, CarComplaints.com shows many Sebring owners have reported problems with the engine, air conditioning and heating systems and airbags on both the 2001 and 2002 Sebrings.

Ford Explorer

The current generation of the Ford Explorer ranks mid-pack among affordable midsize SUVs, and is praised for its off-roading capabilities and a spacious cabin. But according to CarComplaints.com, car owners have recounted problems with the third generation of the Explorer -- made from 2002 to 2005 -- for cracked window panels and faulty transmissions. Consumer Guide also recounts this generation of Explorer has commonly had problems with coolant and oil leaks, rattling timing belts and ticking valves in the 4.6-liter engines.

Dodge Intrepid

The Intrepid was a Consumer Guide Best Buy or Recommended Pick almost every year of its 1998 to 2004 run. Reviewers liked the sedan's passenger and cargo room and praised the nimble handling, especially for the car's size. But a large number of Intrepid owners have reported engine troubles with the 2000 model, and the federal government previously recalled Intrepids for faulty airbags and seatbelts. Consumer Guide notes the Intrepid's most commonly reported mechanical problems include electrical problems with the cabin lights and headlights, plus an engine tapping noise when driving a V6 Intrepid.

Pontiac Aztek

The Aztek's brief four-year run in Pontiac's lineup is a testament to this midsize crossover SUV's unpopularity. We could fudge it and say that disdain for the SUV had to do with its low gas mileage or lacking cabin quality, but truly, critics say the biggest problem with the Aztek was its ungainly dimensions. According to Britain's Daily Telegraph, the Aztek's obtuse shape was "proof that Americans do ugly better than anyone else." On our side of the Atlantic, Consumer Reports lists the Aztek on its Worst Used Cars and TIME Magazine dinged the 2001 model as one of its "Worst Cars of All Time." According to TIME's writers, "This car could not have been more instantly hated it if had a Swastika tattoo on its forehead. ... a bulky, plastic-clad mess. ... The Aztek violates one of the principal rules of car design: We like cars that look like us." But if you can get around the Aztek's unconventional look, reviewers admit the SUV is a competent performer with stable handling and minimal road noise.

Best Used Cars:

2009 Honda Civic

There's a reason the Civic shows up on many auto experts "Best" lists: When it comes to outstanding quality, safety and dependability, there are few better cars. Cars.com notes the Civic is one the most popular used cars sold from July to September of 2008, while Consumer Reports chose it as the best used car in the small car class because its "reliable, economical and fun to drive." CarsComplaints.com finds that some Civic owners have had transmission problems with the 2001 and 2002 models, but the current generation Civic, first sold in 2006, has a strong reliability record and few federal government defect notices.

Subaru Impreza

If you're looking for a distinctive design or thrills on the road, the Impreza probably isn't your first choice. But critics say the car is a safe choice, literally and figuratively. Writers praise the Impreza's secure dynamics with standard all-wheel drive, and highlight the safety features and strong safety scores from the federal government and insurance industry. J.D. Power and Associates lists the 2006 Subie Impreza as a top pick in its 2009 Vehicle Dependability Survey. Although Cars.com reports the 2009 Impreza has one of the best resale values (which means finding one that's used and cheap could be a challenge), Edmunds suggests an Impreza made between 1998 and 2001 as one of the best used cars for those on a tighter budget. "We found high-mileage (150,000-plus) 2.5RS models starting at around $4,500 on Auto Trader," they report. There's an even better deal in U.S. News' used car listings: a 1999 Impreza with 98,746 miles for only $3,995.

Toyota Prius

With every model year the Prius seems to make advancements in fuel efficiency. But even an older model Toyota Prius offers outstanding gas mileage. In 2001, the first year the car was available in the United States, the EPA gave it a combined rating of 41 mpg. Cars.com notes the 2009 Prius has one of the strongest resale values, and J.D. Cars.com reports the Mustang is one of the top-10 most popular used cars based on reports from dealers and private sellers.

While it's not as powerful as some affordable sports cars, numerous automotive experts say the Mazda MX-5 Miata's nimble handling is great no matter what model year you choose. Edmunds notes, "this little roadster proves that the right sports car formula has real staying power," and notes that first generation Miata's made between 1990 and 1997 "are readily available for well under $5 grand." Not only that, but J.D. Power and Associates chose the 2006 Miata as the most reliable compact sports car in its 2009 Vehicle Dependability Survey, and Consumer Reports selected the Miata as its Best Used Sports Car.

The feisty California lawmaker reminds an Army brigadier general of her title after he has the apparent gall to call her "ma'am."

In case you forgot, Barbara Boxer is a senator.

The feisty California lawmaker felt the need to remind an Army brigadier general of that fact Tuesday during a hearing before her Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, where the military officer testifying had the apparent gall to call Boxer "ma'am."

Brig. Gen. Michael Walsh, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was testifying on the Louisiana coastal restoration process in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. He began to answer one of Boxer's questions with "ma'am" when Boxer immediately cut him off.

"You know, do me a favor," an irritated Boxer said. "Could say 'senator' instead of 'ma'am?'"

"Yes, ma'am," Walsh interjected.

"It's just a thing, I worked so hard to get that title, so I'd appreciate it, yes, thank you," she said.

"Yes, senator," he responded.

YOU DECIDE: Super Sensitive or Right On?

However, Walsh surely meant no disrespect, as military protocol advises that officers may use "sir" or "ma'am" when addressing anybody higher than them on the chain of command.

"We would call them 'sir' or 'ma'am' or 'senator such-and-such'," Army spokesman Lt. Col. Nathan Banks said. Banks said any of those terms would be "appropriate" when addressing a senator.

According to one guide, the Navy and Coast Guard typically use "mister" or "miss" to address officers below the rank of commander, and "sir" or "ma'am," or a specific title, to address anyone at that rank or higher.

"You can never go wrong by using 'Sir' or 'Ma'am,' but it is a nice touch if you can properly address a senior officer," says the guide, Military Protocol: Uniformed Services.

Tuesday's hearing was hardly the first time a military officer used those terms during sworn testimony.

The same day at a Senate Armed Services subcommittee hearing, two Navy officials repeatedly referred to Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., with the title, "sir."

"Yes, sir," Navy Vice Adm. Bernard McCullough said when answering questions.

Wicker raised no objections.

Obama Kills Fly, PETA Expresses Disapproval

PETA has a few words for President Obama: Brush, don’t kill. After the President very publically swatted and then killed a fly during an interview with CNBC yesterday, the outspoken animal rights group PETA said they wished Obama had served a better example.

We support compassion for the even the smallest animals," says Bruce Friedrich, VP for Policy at PETA. “We support giving insects the benefit of the doubt."

Friedrich says PETA supports "brushing flies away rather than killing them" and was disappointed that the President had gone ahead and squashed the pesky fly.

This afternoon PETA sent a Katcha Bug, a device which traps bugs and allows their safe release back into nature to the White House.

PETA hopes the President will use the catcher but has no far not received communication back from the White House, although they did not ask for specific correspondence.

Friedrich admits that despite his fly-swatting ways, the President has been a champion for animal rights in the past. PETA claims to be pleased by Obama’s denouncement of factory farming, Canadian seal hunting andMichelle Obama’s stance against wearing fur.

It looks like Microsoft may actually be extending the life of XP...and they should. It's amazing how MS ended up thinking Vista was going to be some kind of OS breakthrough. Fortunately, I only have one machine with Vista on it, and I hardly use it. Let's hope Windows 7 is as good as XP in functionality.

Like Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part III, just when you think Windows XP is out... they pull it back in.

Once again -- and I've now lost count on this one -- Microsoft is officially extending the life of the venerable Windows XP operating system. Based on the company's new rules, the OS can be pre-installed on machines for up to 18 months after the general availability of Windows 7 -- or until Windows 7 Service Pack 1 is released, whichever is sooner.

Assuming Windows 7 ships in October as planned, that means XP may be alive and well until April 2011. On the other hand, Microsoft has been releasing Service Packs more quickly of late, and 18 months would be an awfully long time for Windows to go without a patch.

The move was apparently a response to Gartner's Michael Silver, who lambasted the company's previous policy, which would create only six months of overlap between XP and Windows 7, and which he saw as not enough time for large enterprises to manage the transition from one OS to the other. (And let's get real: No one is going to upgrade to Vista in the meantime.)

In response, Silver called the new policy "good" but "still not great."

His beef? Microsoft's Service Pack clause, which is as nebulous a term as one can fathom. Service Packs are really nothing more than bundled up collections of bug fixes, and there are no guidelines about how serious those fixes need to be or how many of them one needs in order to justify putting out a Service Pack of them. Microsoft could release Windows 7 Service Pack 1 a week after it was released -- citing whatever reasons it wanted -- and abruptly yank XP from the market. What's worse is that Service Packs can arrive without much warning, which would give businesses even less time to prepare for XP going off market.

As a side note, remember that XP is already technically at its end of life: It's no longer available at retail, and only extended support plans are available. Technically only businesses are supposed to be able to buy it. Microsoft will stop patching XP, as well, in April 2014 -- and that includes all security updates.

Unless it changes its mind. Again.

Dang. This must be the longest in-betweens for posting here! Gosh, can't keep doing that, but there has been a lot of activity going on around the Miller homestead. We have been dealing with getting the new year into gear, in which has taken all of our time. Plus, as with everyone, we have been concerned and trying our best to get ready and prepare for tougher times - the economy is in the tank, and I have zero faith in our government (that's a whole 'nuther blog). Plus, all the plants are dead, and my sinuses are whacked out...we desperately need some freakin' rain!

Anyway, hope all is well. Just a few pics to post. And, I'm still trying working on making some changes to the blog, but I just haven't had the time to mess with it much.

On one of our recent events, we went to Caraba's on N. Dale Mabry in Tampa to celebrate Mik's artwork selection by the Children's Cancer Center. She has once again won some money and now has her artwork on a Christmas card. As Hurricane Ike barrels toward South Florida, Americans can be sure they won't have to endure another catastrophic failure of a hurricane protection system. That's because South Florida doesn't have a hurricane protection system. As South Floridians like to say: Ay dios mio! Ike is now scheduled to pass just south of Miami as a Category 4 storm; National Hurricane Center researchers recently concluded that a Cat 4 hitting Miami could cause $70 billion in damage. To use another South Florida-ism: Oy vey!

Dangling into the Gulf like a continental afterthought, Florida has always been Mother Nature's favorite American target, absorbing eight named storms in 2004 and 2005 alone. The state has gotten better at preparing for hurricanes, with stricter building codes and well-rehearsed evacuation plans. But it's still dangerously exposed - not only to the elements, but to financial ruin. It's got the nation's most dysfunctional property insurance market, a byproduct of life in harm's way. Fitch's ratings agency concluded in March that if a big storm hits Florida, "the fragile market could effectively collapse."

Ike could well be a Gustav-like bust rather than a Katrina-like disaster (See photos of Hurricane Gustav here). But eventually, disaster will visit the peninsula, and it's still not clear who's going to pay the tab. "It's going to be a financial nightmare," says Cecil Pearce of the American Insurance Association. "Florida is the nation's basket case."

It's not that Florida's vulnerability is a secret. Florida homeowners pay some of the nation's highest insurance premiums; in a recent poll, despite a housing crisis, an economic crisis, a water crisis and an environmental crisis, Floridians named those premiums their number-two concern about the state's future, behind property taxes but ahead of jobs, education, health care and the dying Everglades.

Since Hurricane Andrew put most Florida insurers out of business and scared several national insurers out of the state, the state government has helped to hedge the risk of hurricanes. It provides subsidized insurance to 1.3 million high-risk homeowners who can't get private policies, an increase of more than 50% in just three years. It also has a Hurricane Catastrophe Fund that provides subsidized reinsurance to the state's private firms.

But a series of studies have made it clear that if the Big One or even a Pretty Big One strikes, Florida is going to have very serious problems. The state-run insurance firm and the Catastrophe Fund have just a few billion dollars on hand, so a major storm would force both entities to float massive bond issues in an unfavorable market, and to make up their shortfalls through gigantic assessments on policyholders. A House committee recently warned that the state would have "extreme difficulty paying its obligations" after a 100-year storm, and that premiums on nearly every property, car and business could skyrocket. A report for the state Office of Insurance Regulation found that even a 50-year storm would cause extreme financial stress, especially given the current credit crunch.

Industry actuaries say the problem is simple: Florida's insurance rates, high as they may be, are not high enough for a state with an estimated 25% of America's high-risk property. Reinsurance rates are soaring, and private insurers like State Farm and Allstate have scaled back in Florida, forcing an additional 500,000 customers into the state pool. "For some areas in Florida, insurance companies could not obtain reinsurance at any price," Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty recently told Congress. And last year, Republican Governor Charlie Crist pushed through reforms to decrease premiums, a politically popular move that will create even more pressure if disaster strikes. "I get the concerns," Crist recently told me. "But we're not going to stand for gouging."

The gouging fears are understandable; McCarty told Congress that some insurers have insisted on 25% profit margins, while using computer models that overstate risk. But no one denies that the risk is real: it's been 80 years since a major storm hit a major Florida city, but hurricane researchers have calculated that the next one could cause as much as $150 billion worth of damage. And Crist's reforms, while reducing premiums, included other changes that increased the risk that taxpayers and policyholders will have to bail out the Cat Fund. "The risk was removed from the insurers' portfolio and is now being supported by the people of Florida," McCarty explained.

That's why Crist and just about every other Florida politician is pushing for a national catastrophe insurance fund, which would shift some of that risk to federal taxpayers. But the idea is not so popular with other states, for the obvious reason that other states don't have as much risk. Florida has spent the last 80 years ignoring its vulnerability, developing its floodplains and shorelines, selling the dream of the Sunshine State to northerners and foreigners. But the day of reckoning will come.

Labor Day: How it Came About; What it Means

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Founder of Labor Day

More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.

Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold."

But Peter McGuire's place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.

The First Labor Day

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

Labor Day Legislation

Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From them developed the movement to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. During the year four more states — Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York — created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.

A Nationwide Holiday

The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take were outlined in the first proposal of the holiday — a street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.

The character of the Labor Day celebration has undergone a change in recent years, especially in large industrial centers where mass displays and huge parades have proved a problem. This change, however, is more a shift in emphasis and medium of expression. Labor Day addresses by leading union officials, industrialists, educators, clerics and government officials are given wide coverage in newspapers, radio, and television.

The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. Just say a quick prayer for all them folks that have been battered already. Wow - - LA must have a bullseye on it. Based on some of the news I've read so far, sounds like they've faired pretty well -- so far -- consididering what they were faced with. Much better than a couple of years ago. But it's not over yet.

We here in Florida still need to keep an eye out for more storms. We are nearing the peak of the season, so by the looks of the Atlantic, we're right on que.

New guide: Preparing for the US DTV Transition If you're in the US it's hopefully no surprise to you that most analog TV signals will be turned off on February 17, 2009. Unfortunately the government has done a particularly poor job of educating the public about what (if anything) needs to be done to prepare.

Fortunately the information you need is easier to understand than you might expect. Our new guide, Preparing for the US DTV Transition, should answer most of them. It will walk you through everything you need to know to determine whether you're ready or not. If there are steps you need to take it will also explain them to you.

Whatever you do, don't wait until the last minute to prepare. If you wait too long you may suddenly find that you need a converter box or antenna that isn't in stock at your local retailer. In order to make sure you can watch TV with no interruption you should act as soon as possible. There are fewer than 200 days left.

MIKAYLA - 5 YEARS CANCER REMISSION!

Five years ago yesterday, August 17, Mikayla walked out of the St. Josephs Childrens Cancer Center after recovery from her last doses of chemo treatment(s). We can now sit back and reflect on this journey that Mikayla traveled, and all the uncertain moments, and the awesome small victory's, and say how blessed she is, and how fragile life is. God is good all the time, and without the prayers and faith of all who were there with us during this trying time, we can say five years is a pretty good start to a normal life.

We have unfortunately lost so many young lives to childhood cancer, innocent little lives that their only hope was to make it to their next day. Our hearts continue to be with their families and we hope those of you reading this will just take a small moment and pray for all the little kids who are suffering as a result of childhood cancer. God can heal, and God can comfort those who ask.

In celebration of Mikayla's milestone of 5 years remission, we threw a big party here at the homestead, and the feature was the biggest water slide I've ever seen. Our wonderful friends from Space Walk of Lakeland set this thing up and needless to say...it was an absolute blast. Everyone had a super time, and we want to thank everyone for coming out and sharing this special moment with Mikayla. God bless. Tropical Storm FAY is eyeballing our state, and we should be feeling the effects sometime on Tuesday/Wednesday. Looks like fun. My Truck

Here's my truck. Just went and picked it up this morning. It's a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie SLT, 2WD, 5.2L (318ci)automatic. Perfect. And, it only has 77,000 miles on it! And, I know the fella I bought it from, and he's an old car buff himself, he bought this new, and he's very meticulous in the maintenance of his vehicles. So I know it's in great shape. $2200...I couldn't pass it up.

Of course, no excuses for not posting, but we have been busy here at the home front. And, really, there just ain't been much to post about. lol. Actually, there is always something to BS about, but I just haven't been that inspired lately. So, I guess today's post is just BS.

Recent events include my finding a new truck! Ok, it's not new, but new to me. I will post a pic soon. As a result, anyone interested in a 1998 Camaro? I will be selling it here very soon, so let me know. I hate to have to sell it, since I'm still a car buff, and though it's not necessarily a 'classic', it does tote the classic 'Camaro' nameplate. I have got to have a truck, it only makes sense. And since my lovely son decided to see how well the 'ol Ranger would hold up in a crash test, I haven't had any access to a truck, and really miss it. So I found a good deal on one, in which is unusual, since the Miller's often think they found a deal, and end up getting screwed. Dad say's "If you can't lose money on a deal, where's the challenge"? LOL.

I'm trying to break that Miller tradition as much as possible.

Today we celebrate the birthday of our Great Nation, The United States Of America. Though I don't agree with some of the things that are happening in our nation today, I still cherish my freedom, and stand behind her..even to death, if that's what it takes to protect my freedom. Everyone needs to stop today, and go back, spend just a little time to reflect on our Nation's history, and realize that the freedom that we enjoy today did not come free. If it weren't for brave men and women, who stood up and believed so strongly in a united, free people, we simply wouldn't be here. I feel a bit Patriotic today, and really just want to tell folks how I feel about it. Here's some links to some history. Plus, if you have cable or satellite, right now (most of the day) on The History Channel, they are running programs about the Revolution of America. Very, very interesting. It makes me proud to be an American.

Movie Review - Pixar's WALL-E

Yesterday evening, we went to see what I thought was a very good flick called WALL-E. This Pixar flick was one of their best as far as I'm concerned. At times it was almost hard to tell if it was real or computer animated...very good effects and a good story. A great movie for the family, so I'd recommend getting out of the house and go see it.

Well, happy belated Father's Day to all you dad's out there. I know I had an awesome one (though I had to work all day Sunday), but I still had a great one because I was totally suprised at what I got for a gift....speechless. My lovely wife and kids got me a Nikon D60 SLR 10.2MP camera! Holy Crap! It was completely awesome and I love it. The bottom line is that they like me taking pics of them lol, but that's ok, 'cause that's what I like to do...preserving memories, hence the name "The Timekeeper". The Timekeeper has now went up a notch, so I might have to start a real business.

Of course, I had to takes some pics of the camera to share. SHWEEEEEEET.

WOW! Jeremy walked last night to receive his diploma. This was a great accomplishment and we are very proud of him. Time truely passes by too quick, because it seems like yesterday he started 1st grade. But, here we are and we now have an official graduate getting ready to start the rest of his life. These things are absolutely amazing. Actually, the Sun-n-fun was going on and the Thunderbirds were part of the show. Well, I know this is old news now, but just thought I'd share a couple of pics from our visits with Brad Richards. We really liked him as an awesome hockey player and as a person. He was always good to the cancer kids and their families in our area by donating a suite in the St.Pete Times Forum for all of the home games. He will be missed and I hate to see him go. I wish Brad the best and we will always be a fan.

I recently shortened and updated the earlier version of this video in which depicts Mikayla's journey with Osteosarcoma. I added a few extra pictures near the end, and took a few out in order to cut it down to one song (slightly extended).

Plans are to share this video with folks involved with the upcoming Relay For Life in April. Susan is on the Mulberry board, and think sharing this video would provide our experience..the bad and the good. God Bless.
